The Environment Agency came to Millbrook Dam to do our bio mass survey today.

As our members are aware we have been attempting to de-snag the dam for a few months now removing several van full’s of debris from the lake, from motor bikes to boats to just about everything you could imagine but unfortunately the EA’s nets were still catching on the last remaining snags we hadn’t managed to clear and they have to lift their nets over these snags and this stops us getting an 100% accurate figure as fish will escape under the nets.

Having said that the EA did a great job and everything they could to net as much as possible.

The result was quite a few large Carp and a small bag of silvers and Bream. What does this tell us ? Well even though only a percentage of fish were netted  it tells us we have a water with a good head of Carp and a small population of silver fish which is a quite good place for us to develop the water from.

All fish were returned to the water except for one small koi that was removed to a garden pond due to the risk they pose of spreading disease.

Before we stock we must now undertake an intense program of planting to create a habitat that will sustain a stock of fish and more importantly give any smaller fish cover from predators, If we were to stock now we would be basically feeding Goosanders and cormorants that we know visit this water.

We now know there is certainly a decent population of carp for anglers to go for and silvers could be caught with effort but maybe not the huge bags that we see on our other waters.

Below is a selection of pictures from the netting:

This is from their website : http://www.anglingtrust.net/

The Angling Trust is the representative body for game, coarse and sea anglers in England. Our members support the campaigns and legal action we carry out to protect fish stocks and our programmes to increase the number of anglers fishing for fun and in competitions. We’re fighting for the future of YOUR fishing, but we need YOUR support to do more. If you want to protect your fish and fishing, for now and in future join your representative body today.

We have organised an extra work party for Sunday 22nd May so any members wishing to take advantage of the £10 consession for completing a work party have a chance to squeeze one in. There is always plenty of work that needs doing so anyone able to attend will be greatly appreciated.

On the fishing front the lakes have been fishing very well. Regulars are reporting fantastic sport so now is a good time to get down and wet a line !

Not been too much to post the last couple of months with the winter freeze pretty much shutting up the lakes.

You can usually find a clear area on Rainwater 2 (diggle) next to the inlet and I can tell you by personal experience that fish can be caught from this clear spot even in the coldest conditions.

We have been keeping an eye on the iced up lakes and have broken the ice when we thought it was necessary and have monitored oxygen levels and I can report we are having no problems with the cold conditions.

Myself and Gary have been invited to attend an EA Fisheries Management course at Reaseheath College next weekend so the skills and knowledge we pick up from there can only benefit the club.

Hopefully we will see a prolonged mild spell soon and we can get back to the fishing !!

EA demo day

We went to an EA demonstration day on Sunday where we showed how to build floating island and instructed on the benefits to be had by installing them to our fisheries.

Good food for thought and something we will be looking at doing come next spring so if you see structures starting to appear towards the end of winter this is what it we are doing and be assured as we improve the habitat the fishing and fish size will improve.
